What should be in a first aid kit?

A basic first aid kit should contain plasters, sterile dressings, bandages, triangular bandages, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, disposable gloves, scissors and a foil blanket. Workplace kits should follow HSE guidance or the BS 8599-1 standard, with contents and quantities scaled to the number of people and the level of risk.

What is the difference between an HSE and a BS 8599-1 first aid kit?

HSE kits follow older Health and Safety Executive guidance and contain a basic set of items. BS 8599-1 is the British Standard introduced in 2011 and updated in 2019, offering more comprehensive contents in small, medium and large sizes. Both are acceptable, but the right choice depends on your workplace first aid needs assessment.

How many first aid kits do I need for my workplace?

The number and size of kits depends on your first aid needs assessment, including how many employees you have and the level of risk. As a general guide, low-risk workplaces often provide a small kit for up to 25 people, a medium kit for 25 to 100, and a large kit for every 100 people, with additional kits for separate buildings or floors.

Is a first aid kit a legal requirement in the UK?

Yes. Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, every UK workplace must provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and personnel. At minimum this means a suitably stocked first aid kit appropriate to the workplace's size and risk level.

Do you offer bulk discounts on first aid kits?

Yes. Jax First Aid offers bulk discounts, purchase orders and instant credit for businesses, schools and organisations. Contact our team for a tailored quote on larger orders.
