Frequently Asked Questions

What is this Guedel Airways OPA used for? ▼

This oropharyngeal airway is used to keep a clear airway in an unconscious or deeply sedated patient by stopping the tongue from obstructing the epiglottis and airway passage.

When should a Guedel airway not be used? ▼

The airway OPA should not be used in a conscious or semi-conscious patient with an intact gag reflex, as insertion can provoke gagging, vomiting or airway compromise.

How do I choose the correct size? ▼

Select the OPA size required by measuring from the patient’s mouth corner to the angle of the mandible (jaw). The flange should rest at the lips and the tip should reach the base of the tongue without going beyond.

Does this airway come sterile and individually wrapped? ▼

Each OPA airway is sterile and individually wrapped.

Is the airway colour coded for size identification? ▼

All sizes are clearly labelled and colour coded to simplify fast size selection and compliance with standard airway sizing standards.

How many sizes are available in this range? ▼

The OPA airways are available in seven sizes, covering neonate, infant, child, small adult to large adult, allowing for suitability across patient age and size groups.

If the patient is semi conscious or with an uncertain gag reflex, what alternative should we use? ▼

In such cases, consider using a nasopharyngeal airway (NPA), which is better tolerated in patients with partial airway reflexes.
